A Sudoku End to the MySQL Conference
April 22nd, 2008 by Richard Chart
Sudoku puzzles as a spectator sport? They were at this year’s MySQL User Conference.
Swiss query wizard Beat Vontobel applied the craftsmanship of a watchmaker to solve a 6 x 6 Sudoku Puzzle in a single query with LOTs of self joins. It is possible that only serious database geeks think this is cool, but Beat had an audience full of those so his feat was greeted with rapturous applause!
Matt is now challenging himself to dig into C++ and use all the new knowledge he gathered this week to build his very own MySQL storage engine – he won’t reveal the details, but the gleam in his eye says that we can look forward to something very special…
It was a thrill for me to have the opportunity to present at this year’s conference. I spoke on Thursday about how we take advantage of the characteristics of MySQL’s MyISAM tables to allow the EM7 database to grow dynamically from an environment supporting less than 100 devices to several thousand. We do this by dynamically creating databases and tables on the fly as they are needed by the EM7 collection engine. If you are interested in hearing more, I will be presenting a webinar on the same subject on May 20th.
Appropriately we finished off the week in California with more Frisbee – this time in the wide-open spaces of San Francisco International Airport, concourse A. Unfortunately for other travelers, TSA guidelines do not yet consider collapsible Frisbees to be dangerous weapons. That is likely to be changing shortly as the occasional errant flight path from Flip or Matt sent passengers scurrying for the shelter of Starbucks.
