EM7 Customer at NetworkWorld IT Roadmap DC – Hughes on Network Management
December 12th, 2008 by Valerie Barber

We love tradeshows! They’re a great way for us at to meet face-to-face with lots of like-minded folks (customers and non-customers, alike) from a wide range of industries – and they give us a reason to distribute our famous EM7 playing cards. Capping off our 2008 activities is the Network World IT Roadmap in DC. We like the show because it’s local (how else could we participate in a show in the middle of the holiday season?) and because for the second year in a row, an EM7 customer has been selected to present a case study of how they use EM7.
On December 16th, Karl Fosburg from Hughes Network Systems will be discussing how they use EM7 to monitor more than 2,200 servers, network gear and the associated custom Hughes applications for delivery of their highly available satellite networks. They serve both enterprises and consumers, so it’s imperative that Hughes detect and resolve problems before they affect customers. According to Karl, “EM7’s Dynamic Applications enable us to highly customize our monitoring solution by combining data from multiple sources to determine actual problems and greatly reducing false or misleading alarms.”
For a preview of what he’ll talk about, check out these video snippets we took at Interop earlier this year.
- Getting Rid of False Alarms and Consolidating Monitoring Tools
- Making the Business Case to Upper Management
We’re proud of Hughes’ successes and like to think that in some small way we help them reach their goals. Karl will be speaking around 4:00pm as part of analyst Jim Metzler’s Network Management, Automation & Control track that begins at 2:30. Fosburg will also be at our booth #509 after the presentation for follow-up questions or discussions.
At last year’s show, Legg Mason CTO Dan Greller presented and generated lots of interest in discussing how EM7 enabled their IT operations team to revamp their network monitoring to meet the challenges a dramatic business expansion/realignment that took Legg Mason from regional to international operations “overnight”. In 2005, nearly $5 billion in acquisitions expanded the company to locations and operations around the world. The “new” Legg Mason required 24×7x365 availability and no latency for mission-critical trading desk applications, transactions and customer-facing applications. In this instance, “scaling” meant more than growing in size – they needed to tackle geographic diversities, training, support and overall change. And they needed to deliver on time.
Dan discussed how they deployed EM7 within two months – on time and on budget – to establish a standardized toolset for network monitoring and management for locations around the world. Out of the box, EM7 established a baseline for monitoring, providing a common solution and “single pane of glass” view of metrics shared throughout the organization. EM7’s low learning curve allowed administrators to quickly navigate the system and easily train and roll out EM7 to new offices. The complete story is in Dan’s presentation.
Registration for the NetworkWorld show is free for qualified attendees, and you must pre-register (hurry!). If you can, come and hear Karl’s presentation and stop by our booth #509 to discuss your needs as well as your successes.

[...] This is our second year doing the Network World roadshow. We had a great time last year – meeting with several people that ended up part of the EM7 extended customer family and watching Legg Mason share their very interesting story of using EM7 to handle the network management challenges related to going from regional/national to global operations “overnight”.
