IT Management Resolutions for 2009
January 14th, 2009 by Julia Lim
If you believe the New York Times, 4 out of 5 people will eventually break their New Year’s resolutions. According to FranklinCovey, 35% of respondents break their resolutions by the end of January. People get busy, they find they weren’t quite as committed as they thought they were to their goals, other things take priority.
So it’s with this in mind that I take all the survey results and resulting forward-looking projections by analysts and industry pundits that abound this time of year. Case in point: a NetworkWorld article on the IT Management ‘Hot List’ for 2009.
A perennial favorite on the list: managing configurations and more specifically the CMDB. I have to say that with the downturn in IT spending and more focus by IT on the projects that will have quick results and returns, a CMDB project (except for the very large companies that can’t get a handle on all the stuff they have without it) must actually be the last on the list.
Second on the NetworkWorld list is managing virtual servers. Cost savings will make this a nice go-to project for IT, but management remains a challenge, especially for large installations. The market around this is maturing but still has so many components and complexities that getting it right and making it easy is still the brass ring vendors are reaching for.
And the third area the article mentions is more automation technologies which make a lot of sense to spend money against as everyone tries to do more with less or even do the same with less, as budget and people get cut.
