What’s in store for IT Jobs after the inauguration? Many pundits are predicting the demand for IT jobs will rise. Rob McGovern, CEO of JobFox, predicts “this will be the second best of times for IT people. Our economy is an information-based economy, and Obama’s $700 billion economic stimulus programs will create millions of new jobs – and that means it’s a good time to be an IT person.” McGovern states the health IT industry, alternative energy sector and more mainstream tech talent will be the key sectors to gain more talent.

According to Network World’s Denise Dubie, some analysts think one of the Big 4 may succumb to acquisition next year by a “high-tech heavyweight looking to buy its way in.” We have our guesses about this one, and of course there have been rumors about BMC for a long time now. In 2009, enterprises will turn to management and automation products to improve services but with “tight” budgets, and the economic downturn means that company valuations, including the Big 4’s, just might be easier to absorb. Glenn O’Donnell, a senior analyst at Forrester Research said, “The future of IT is going to rely on a broad-based approach to management and automation, and software vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle and SAP realize they need to be a part of this overall vision of IT and not supply piece parts.” Preaching to the choir

Paul Maritz, CEO of VMware, boils down cloud computing in language for the masses. Seems that enterprises are trying to be like Google: “They think Google has this giant computer they can flexibly deploy applications on top of, and that’s what they aspire to achieve.” Still no real news about Virtual Datacenter Operating System (VDC-OS), but it, like the 100 other things announced by VMware at VMworld, is supposed to be available in 2009. Hmm – wonder how much of a holiday the VMware folk are getting?

Following the news that this is Apple’s last year at Macworld (what’s up with that?) came this gem: “Apple Announces Last Year of Christmas”. I think this one went kinda flat. It would have been much funnier if coming as a spoof from someone else. Coming from Apple and touting how great their retail stores are doing, it’s just kinda self-aggrandizing.
