Interop took center stage this week and news coming out of the show was everywhere you turned. Of course, we did our bit to report on what was going on, and here’s a selection of some great articles/blogs we found:
- Some big “news” coming out of Interop was Microsoft and HP’s joint UC announcement. The two companies promise to spend $180 million over four years to create integrated hardware-software solutions for unified communications and collaboration that would completely transform the industry. (They didn’t share a lot of details – see our post on the announcement in the kickoff keynote). Alex Lewis of Network World sees this ‘expanded alliance’ as no big deal except for that it’s a big jab in the face to Cisco. I think I’d have to agree – at this point it appears to just be an affirmation of the fact that existing HP and Microsoft products play in the UCC space but I will bet you it took a village to make the canned demo work at Interop.
- Even though some vendors (and because a lot of Interop attendees) are still confused when it comes to cloud computing definitions, cloud management wares are of course increasing. Denise Dubie of Network World touted four companies (including ScienceLogic) that provide provisioning and IT services management for the cloud.
- More than four in 10 preregistered Interop attendees said they plan to increase IT spending in 2009 over 2008, according to a poll conducted by Interop organizers. Most said they were interested in technology related to virtualization, cloud computing, IT energy conservation, mobility and wireless, and network infrastructure and data center upgrades.
- Our friends over at Network Instruments polled 120 network managers, engineers and IT executives to learn how IT organizations are putting server and desktop virtualization technology to use. Many respondents have tried or regularly use virtualization, including nearly 40% who have already tried our VDI. But surprisingly over half said that they experience more problems than benefits with the technology. The problems – lack of visibility and tools to troubleshoot performance problems in virtual environments and lack of training on virtual infrastructure. Interop also held a panel on the future of virtualization management which unfortunately had to compete with the Booth Crawl - and ended up being a party-line oriented yet amusing take by 4 key vendors in the space.
- The Best of Interop Awards have been announced, and we’re pleased to say that EM7 G3 won Best of Interop in the Network Management category. We’re honored to have been recognized by Interop and now I’m going to have to figure out how to get “award-winning” on those brochures I just had printed…
In case all of the links included here weren’t enough for you Curt Franklin posted a list of links to Interop news on his InteropInsider blog as well.
