This is William Shatner speaking. You, HP, promised me a toxic-free computer by 2009. Now my friends at Greenpeace tell me that I’ll have to wait ’til 2011.What’s up with that?

shatnerThis is an actual company-wide voicemail sent to all HP hq employees. Imagine coming to work and hearing it. Greenpeace says that HP has not met its promise to stop using toxic chemicals in its products. So they gained access to the rooftop of HP’s global offices in Palo Alto and painted the words “Hazardous Products”, covering over 11,000 square feet. You can  listen to the entire voicemail message on the Greenpeace site. Priceless.

Thinking back on Cisco CEO John Chamber’s keynote at Cisco Live that included his vision for the company, we’re not surprised that Cisco is expanding beyond networking equipment into selling computer servers for data centers. Some analysis of Chambers’ recent comments summizes that he sees IBM as a friend and HP as foe. What’s your take?

While the GSA is telling software vendors to prove their security in the cloud in a special FedBizOpps notice on July 30, the OMB is pushing toward a September 9 launch of a government cloud storefront. Federal CIO Vivek Kundra recently spoke at the National Defense University and outlined his vision of standardization that removes the complexities for agencies, allowing them to access technology without worrying about FISMA compliance, certification, accreditation or provisioning.

President Clinton for Cybersecurity Chief! Hey – he can bring home detained Americans in North Korea, so we’re sure he could handle this position. Acting chief Melissa Hathaway is leaving and about 30 people have turned down the job. One opinion is that it’s “just not high enough in the White House food chain to attract the most qualified people.” So it’s just about status?

The US government has reached a compromise between network vendors and independent test labs for IPv6 compliance testing called the USGv6 Test Program. All routers, hosts and network security systems must pass  by July 2010 in order to be sold to U.S. federal agencies. IPv6 is always a big topic at FOSE 2009, especially as mandated dates slip past

Happy belated System Administrator Appreciation Day! Celebrated on the last Friday in July (yes, we’re a week late – it won’t happen again!), be sure to let your SysAdmins know how much they mean to you!
