What’s in a Number?

April 25th, 2008 by Julia Lim

We conducted our second government IT survey at FOSE 2008 this year, got pretty interesting results and can start to show some trends for technology adoption in particular. First of all, thanks to everyone who participated! Without you, we’d have nothing to share with everyone else.

You can find the full results of the survey and a year-over-year comparison here. We asked government IT professionals what IT initiatives they thought were important and whether or not they had tools and solutions in place to support those initiatives.

Some answers – like almost 100% saying that having a complete IT asset inventory was important – were no-brainers. But here’s where asking if they have tools in place becomes important (and not just a sales question!).

There were several IT topics – like IPv6, Virtualization Management and Green IT – where importance was high but actual deployment was low. So what does that tell us? Depending on the topic, the answer to that question varied.

As we said before, we love trade shows. They give us the opportunity to talk directly to the guys in the field that have the problems we’re trying to solve. So while the numbers are good, the conversations were even better.

One guy wanted to write in “Never” when asked when he’d implement tools to support IPv6. Another woman chuckled the entire time she was filling out the survey – with some barks of laughter (I think when she got to the “most significant challenges” question). And the award for funniest answer must go to the guy who wrote in “stupid people” as his most significant challenge.

More on these in blog posts to follow. I’ll go into more detail but invite you to go ahead and join the conversation. What are your thoughts?
