Winner – Best of Interop
May 21st, 2009 by David Link
It’s been so busy here at Interop, this is my first opportunity to write this post on some fantastic news for the company. The InformationWeek and Interop judges selected EM7 G3 as the winner of Best of Interop in the Network Management category. Words can’t fully express our immense pride in this achievement. To understand the sheer nature of our elation you have to wind the hands of time back about 24 months ago. Our superb engineering team realized that we had an opportunitity to take a dramatically different technology approach to fulfill a new product vision that went well beyond our initial EM7 product.
Interestingly, in the 5 years that had transpired since our initial product was released, the world of technology had changed dramatically and our market opportunity had expanded. So they started dreaming about a new product vision.
As the company sped along during those early years, the tech world continued to changed around us. When we released the initial version of EM7, 64 Bit operating systems and dual core CPUs were just arriving on the scene, and memory was very expensive. At the same time, we found that although our product was selling well in the marketplace, our customers and new business opportunities led us towards a new product roadmap for the rapidly evolving frontier of Huge Scale, Virtualization, and advanced Multi-tenancy features. So after many late nights of heated and really intense debate (well into the early hours of the next day) we decided to push hard, go against the grain of conventional wisdom and triple our investment in R&D. We wanted to get it right. That meant starting over once again with a clean sheet of paper and a nearly clean white board and creating some new guiding principles.
Extreme scale required a brand new architecture that would take advantage of the hardware advances that Moore’s Law had produced during the past 5 years. But it had to advance more than just scale – we made literally thousands of changes and enhancements, taking everything engineering had learned and balancing all of this with an intense set of customer feedback into our new EM7 G3 product vision.
So fast forward the time machine to today. The engineering team has been working 7 days a week, 14 hours per day for the past 9 months of what they would describe as a really long, intense wind sprint. In the process, they invented a paradigm shifting solution for our industry that will build a foundation for our future.
We have always been fixated on our mission to build great products that really make a difference in the lives of IT professionals. Now comes the validation that our efforts have been worth the incredible effort as G3 has received the independent review from a panel of Information Week and Interop expert judges.
Wow, we are so very honored to receive this award. It is incredibly inspiring and fulfilling for the entire team. Stay tuned - as I have said before we are just getting started!
